People Before Profit Councillor Madeleine Johansson and TD for Dublin Mid West Gino Kenny have expressed strong disapproval over the substantial amounts outstanding in Derelict and Vacant Sites Levies within South Dublin. The figures, revealed at the South Dublin County Council meeting on Monday July 8th, highlight a concerning trend of non-payment by property owners, exacerbating the housing crisis and hindering community development.
Councillor Madeleine Johansson has been vocal about the issue, emphasizing the necessity for immediate action. “It is unacceptable that, as of the end of 2023, €182,050 remains outstanding in Derelict Sites Levies, and no collections were made during that year. Despite some progress in 2024, the lack of compliance by property owners is clear,” stated Councillor Johansson. “I will continue to pursue the council to Compulsory Purchase these derelict sites because it’s evident that the owners have no interest in either developing them or paying the fees. We cannot allow this neglect to persist while our communities suffer.”
TD Gino Kenny echoed Johansson’s concerns, highlighting the broader implications of the issue. “The presence of numerous derelict and vacant sites amidst a severe housing crisis is deeply troubling. The total outstanding in Vacant Site Levies is €540,750, with €138,250 specifically owed for 2022,” Kenny remarked. “These sites represent missed opportunities for housing and community amenities. We need robust enforcement and innovative solutions to ensure these properties are brought back into productive use.”
