South Dublin EPIC 2 – a journey through speculative fiction curated by Colm Keegan

EPIC Clankland Tallaght Clondalkin

This is South Dublin as you’ve not seen it before.

The Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr Mark Ward will launch South Dublin EPIC 2 – the second iteration of an online collaborative and interactive work on Thursday 28 March in County Library, Tallaght.

South Dublin EPIC 2 combines story and art and is curated by Colm Keegan, with artwork by Bob Byrne. It is South Dublin County re-imagined and built from stories of the young writers of South Dublin. It is South Dublin as you’ve not seen it before. South Dublin County Council Libraries & Arts commissioned writer Colm Keegan to develop and deliver a series of creative writing workshops with young people. Colm took the brief and delivered on it on a truly EPIC scale. Schools and youth organisations across the county were invited to participate in what Colm described as a ‘journey through speculative fiction’. *

Participants in the EPIC project were encouraged to look on South Dublin County, its history, its geography and their own experience in it, as source material from which whole new worlds could be built. They could use this creative process a means to explore their lives in a unique and liberating way.

“South Dublin Epic is first and foremost about writing, but it’s also about much more than that. In exploring where their story should go, they also explore what type of people they want to be. It’s great to see teenagers speculating on a myriad of possible lives for themselves, coping with climate disaster, zombie apocalypse, marauding invaders or draconian dictatorships – giving themselves superpowers, dilemmas, flaws and wild futures, stepping up to be writers and leaders at the same time.” Colm Keegan explains.

Credit is due to the young people and staff of the following schools and groups who took part in the process:

Youthreach Priory

The King’s Hospital, Palmerstown

Coláiste Éanna, Rathfarnham

Firhouse Community College, Tallaght

Kingswood Community College

Mount Seskin Community College, Tallaght

Killinarden Community School

Moyle Park College, Clondalkin

The South Dublin EPIC 2 website and exhibition will be launched on Thursday 28 March, 2019 at County Library, Tallaght. The website will be accessed through https://epicdublin.com/
