TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe has said that the latest Daft rent report is added proof that renters desperately need a change in government because Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are clearly out of their depth as rents in South Dublin have risen another 4% in the last year.
Teachta Crowe said “Another Daft rent report and another rise in rents. There has been another 4% increase in the average rent across south Dublin. “A young family from Tallaght in a three bed house now face an average annual rent of €32,568. That’s a good wage spent solely on rent. “Sinn Féin believes that we need a stable private rental sector that provides homes for people who want to live in that sector, either long term or while moving to social, affordable or private owner occupied homes.
“We want to see a private rental sector that works for both tenants and landlords. That provides tenants with adequate, secure and affordable homes while enabling landlords to make a reasonable return on their investment. “Sinn Féin would introduce a three-year emergency ban on rent increases for all existing and new tenancies. We would also institute reforms in the private rental sector to support the increased professionalisation of the sector while strengthening security of tenure, enforcing minimum standards, and improving affordability.
“More than almost any other sector of society, renters cannot bear the brunt of another Fine Gael/Fianna Fáil government. We have had a hundred years of government for the landlord and never the renter. It is time that changed.”
Renters need a change in government more than most
