On the 27th of September the Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Councillor Vicki Casserly officially opened the newly refurbished Athletic Track. This athletics track rejuvenation project has been delivered as part of the Sports Capital Grant Programme funded by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and supported by Lucan Harriers Athletics Club.
Speaking at the event Mayor Cllr Vicki Casserly said; “This opening ceremony marks the delivery of a significant project for the whole community, helping to promote better physical and mental health in line with South Dublin County Council’s Corporate Plan. This athletics track rejuvenation project has been delivered as part of the Sports Capital Programme funded by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport; which aims to provide grants to assist in the development or refurbishment of sports facilities and the provision of sports equipment. It has also been part delivered by the monumental fund-raising efforts of the Lucan Harriers Athletics Club members”.
The Mayor went on to pay tribute to the local community for their support in both the development of the track and their continued support of this valuable facility and the work of the Council staff who are responsible for the delivery of the project and the continued maintenance of these facilities.
Also speaking at the event was Ms. Marie Cassidy Chairperson of Lucan Harriers Athletics Club: “We have achieved much over the last few years; a European Silver medallist recently arrived home from the Masters Championships and we have Juvenile National record holders. In addition we have increased participation in athletics across all sections of the club. Now we have a marvellous facility which will benefit the people of Lucan for many years to come.” Ms Cassidy thanked all the members who volunteered at the club and all the staff at South Dublin County Council.
