Mazda MX-5 – 30 Years of Driving Fun.

Motoring-Matters-Logo

Celebrating the birth of the iconic Mazda MX-5, Mazda unveiled a 30th Anniversary Edition MX-5 at the 2019 Chicago Motor Show, three decades after its debut at the very same motor show in 1989. With global production limited to 3000 models, only 10 units will be available in Ireland, and these will be sold in selected authorised Mazda dealerships.

Strikingly Unique;

After 30 years and more than 1 million units sold, Mazda feels that the MX-5 has grown into more than simply Mazda’s creation. It now belongs to the enthusiasts around the world who have supported the development of the model and helped it become the world’s best-selling two-seater roadster. Launched as both a tribute to these MX-5 fans and as a mark of the high hopes the firm has for the future of its sports car, the 30th Anniversary Edition is exclusively offered in the newly developed Racing Orange body paint, a strikingly vivid colour that marks out this special MX-5.

Distinctive Features;

In addition to Racing Orange, the MX-5 30th Anniversary Edition features forged aluminium ‘Rays’ wheels developed exclusively for the MX-5 in co-operation with Rays Co Ltd. and a 30th anniversary badge displaying the model’s serial number. Other unique features include orange brake calipers with Nissin brakes on the rear, and Brembo brakes on the front wheels. Inside, the bespoke feel continues with orange accents on the seats, door trim, dashboard, steering wheel, air vents and gear lever, while Recaro seats and Alcantara on the door trim and instrument panel add a sense of exclusivity. The 30th Anniversary Edition also features Apple Carplay™ and Android Auto™ as standard.

Outstanding Petrol Engine;

The 30th Anniversary MX-5 features the new 184PS (181bhp) version of the 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine, and is available only as the roadster body-type. This engine is one of the greatest four-cylinder motors you can buy. Silky-smooth, it starts up with a fruity growl and is likeable in everyday use, but really comes alive when the accelerator pedal is pushed towards the floor. The engine revs all the way around the rev-counter to 7,500rpm, and is responsible for making a superb car even better than ever before. This range-topping special edition comes with a six-speed manual gearbox, Bilstein dampers, strut-brace and a limited slip differential.

Pure Driving Enjoyment;

The Mazda MX-5 enhances the pure joy of driving with a superior power-to-weight ratio, rear-wheel drive, and more comfort and technology than ever before. Mazda’s signature KODO (Soul of Motion) design gives the new Mazda MX-5 a more aggressive and sculptured look, while retaining the classic coupe cues of a sleek bonnet, set-back seating and a short rear overhang. In fact, one look at the new Mazda MX-5 is enough to set pulses racing. The new Mazda MX-5 has perfect 50:50 weight balance, and a lower centre of gravity, giving it the advantage of responding precisely as the driver intends.

Test Car;

My MX-5 30th Anniversary Edition test car turned heads wherever I drove, while performance from the engine was never an issue. Producing 181bhp and 205Nm of torque, the car is capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 6.5-seconds, and can achieve a top speed of 205km/h – where permitted.  Claimed fuel consumption of 6.9l/100km on a combined driving cycle seems realistic, while an annual road tax disc will cost €570. The MX-5 is lighter than most cars on the road, and this is reflected in the precision of the steering, the light clutch, and the enjoyable short-throw gearbox. Standard specification in this special edition MX-5 is superb, and includes features such as multiple airbags, alarm, immobiliser, twin exhausts, piano black fashion bars, piano black door mirrors, LED headlights with LED daytime running lights & auto height control, rain & light sensor, rear parking sensors, keyless entry, automatic air-conditioning, cruise control, multimedia commander, integrated Bluetooth™, Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, heated Recaro seats with integrated BOSE™ speakers, and a multi-function steering wheel, along with a suite of advanced safety features.

Verdict & Pricing;

With its unique detailing, generous equipment levels, exclusivity, and bold Racing Orange paint, the Mazda MX-5 30th Anniversary Edition is the perfect way to celebrate three decades of this iconic sports car. Pricing for the MX-5 range starts at €28,195, while this limited edition convertible is available for €40,995 – but time is of the essence.
