Mayoral selection in South Dublin

People Before Profit Madeleine Johansson

On Friday 26th June a new Mayor for South Dublin was selected at the County Council Annual Meeting held in the Basketball Arena. The Fianna Fail nomination of Cllr Ed O’Brien won the support of the ruling group of Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and the Greens in a scenario that closely resembled that of the new government being formed in the National Convention Centre on the following Saturday.

Cllr Madeleine Johansson commented “People Before Profit supported the nomination of Solidarity’s Cllr Sandra Fay for Mayor and PBP Cllr Madeleine Johansson was nominated for Deputy Mayor receiving 9 votes. The FF/FG/Green council ruling group pre-dates the new government by 12 months but it has already shown its true nature. In the 2020 budget rents were increased for council tenants while councillors re-instated junkets for themselves.”

The local Councillor added “Now we are guaranteed that South Dublin County Council will fall in to line with every government policy, that ordinary people will be paying the price for the expected economic crisis and that the issues that need urgent attention such as housing will continue to be left to the private market. We will see more council land sold off to private developers and carbon taxes for working people while corporations get big hand-outs. We need to prepare to get organised and to fight against this new government and the council ruling group which will implement its policies. People Before Profit will not accept working people paying for either the climate or economic crisis.”
