Fianna Fáil Councillor for Palmerstown-Fonthill, Shane Moynihan, has expressed alarm at the increased prevalence of littering and illegal dumping across Lucan, Palmerstown and Clondalkin in recent months.
Cllr Moynihan said “The increased prevalence of illegal dumping has become apparent throughout Palmerstown, Lucan and North Clondalkin but has also been marked by a noticeable increase in littering, especially of face masks and disposable gloves. Our communities take pride in our area – it is unfair to have this reputation sullied by a few.”
Figures released to Cllr Moynihan show that the volume of dumped material collected during the months of March and April has increased by 33% compared to the same period in 2019. Worryingly, there has been a reduction in the amount of litter being collected from litter bins which is 13% less than the same period in 2019.
Cllr Moynihan added: “Since being elected, I have consistently called for more targeted approach to illegal dumping, by reporting its incidence and using CCTV to identify perpetrators. We need to increase provision of public litter bins to build the positive habit of disposing of litter responsibly. I welcome the continued commitment of South Dublin County Council to continue funding Tidy Towns groups who undertake Trojan work to benefit us all”
“As we all adapt to spending more time at home and in our localities, we need to make sure that we protect what we have. Keeping our area clean and tidy is something which makes us all proud.”
