Fine Gael Councillor, Emer Higgins, donned a Commercials GAA kit to take to the stage as Sporty Spice for the Lip Sync Together fundraiser for St Mary’s and Commercial GAA clubs’.

“I am no Spice Girl and when I was asked by Brendan Murray to take on the role of one I was pretty apprehensive; but when he told me I’d be the only girl in the group I was terrified,” confessed Cllr. Emer Higgins.

“Anyone who knows St. Mary’s and Commercials know you can’t say no to either club. And so, after weeks of training us wannabe’s took to the stage. It was so much fun. There were over 850 people there to support the 17 acts that wowed the crowds. Jonann Reilly stole the show with her amazing performance as Lulu – she was born to be on a stage. Our Joe Dolan was inundated with knickers thrown on stage during his performance and Aishling McGee stunned people with her amazing performance as Beyonce. Despite that, there was nothing like the reaction to Frozen or to Tina Turner who turned 70 during our rehearsals,” said Cllr. Emer Higgins who is a General Election candidate for the area.

When talking about the funds collected, Cllr Higgins stated that “The level of community support for the event was incredible, the room was absolutely buzzing and over twenty-five thousand euros was raised to support both clubs. It goes to show how when a community comes together amazing things can happen. A huge congrats to the organizing committee, in particular Tish, Deirdre and Lorraine, who put so much effort into making sure the event was a success.”

“I believe that sports like GAA, promote amazing competencies amongst people. Skills such as sportsmanship, teamwork and determination are all honed on the pitch. To support initiatives like these is in fact to invest in the future of our community,” concluded Cllr Emer Higgins.
