A major second phase of the redevelopment of IT Tallaght is included in an€200m Government and Private investment in big building projects, according to Dublin South West TD and Independent Minister, Katherine Zappone.
Minister Zappone says the phase two development of IT Tallaght is one of just eleven projects being progressed nationwide. A technical appraisal will now commence of the work. New facilities will include a technical development centre (i.e. practice based learning facilities for engineering and science courses); facilities for the culinary arts; and new classrooms and computer labs.
Welcoming the announcement Minister Zappone added: “Development of IT Tallaght was a key budget demand of mine in recent negotiations. The quick response of my colleague the Minister for Education, Richard Bruton, is a tribute to the hard work, dedication and reputation of all on campus.
The project will go ahead as a public-private partnership, in line with the biggest education investments planned across the country. I am asking that the technical, planning and design phases are concluded as
quickly as possible so as we can see the new buildings take shape.
The IT is a huge asset. It is a hub of education for South and West Dublin and through its strong reputation also attracts students from all parts of the country and further afield. Having a strong third level institution is key if we are to develop Tallaght as a ‘Smart City’ of the future. As an Independent Minister for the area I am determined that our campus will be supported to have the best possible facilities.
Investing in Education, Research and Development is an investment in communities and our people. It will not only put Tallaght at the cutting edge but will provide future jobs. This public-private partnership will be an important step. But it is equally important that our Institute continues to build its partnerships with business, other researchers as well as the local community.
We have an IT to be proud of. Through its research, education and work it will help students develop new skills, open up new opportunities for Tallaght and continue building a reputation which makes us all proud.”
