Sinn Féin spokesperson for the arts, youth affairs and LGBTQI rights Senator Fintan Warfield has welcomed the news that University College Dublin will launch a number of initiatives that accommodate transgender and gender-fluid students and staff.
Senator Warfield said:
“Our third level institutions should be places of inclusion and diversity. The measures announced today will make UCD a more welcoming campus for those who wish to study, work or visit.
“Some measures are practical such as ‘gender-neutral’ bathrooms and changing facilities, which allow people to use facilities without fear of prejudice or judgement.”
“Additionally, the measures that allow graduates to change their names on their degrees shows that the university values a students identity as much as their achievements.
“It’s heartening to see the swathe of third level institutions and employers initiating their own transgender inclusion policies.”
“The transgender community account for between one and two percent of our population and the government should start to consider a universal transgender inclusion policy for all public bodies and public sector employers.”
