A Dublin boy has taken home a top prize in a gardening challenge created for primary school students to participate in during the country’s lockdown period. Agri Aware’s Incredible Edibles Family Challenge saw over 1,500 families and almost 4,000 children take part in the agriculture and food education body’s popular primary school programme from home during the country’s lockdown period.
Fionn Jones (9) from Garristown, Co Dublin was the overall winner in the Special Education Category and was awarded a gardening hamper worth €100.
Due to the rise in popularity in gardening and interest in planting fruit and vegetables as a result of social distancing during the country’s lockdown period, Agri Aware decided to launch its popular Incredible Edibles Family Challenge programme to primary school children and their families to undertake at home.
For a period of five weeks Agri Aware’s Incredible Edibles Family Challenge encouraged families to learn all about where food comes from and the importance of eating Irish fruit and vegetables, for a healthy, balanced diet.
Children carried out five tasks which focused on food origin, the importance of eating Irish fruit and vegetables for a balanced diet, planting their own produce and cooking Irish fruit and vegetables with the supervision of their parent/guardian.
From planting and reusing materials at home to learning facts and getting creative, the Incredible Edibles Family Challenge educated and entertained families of all ages.
Agri Aware Chairman, Alan Jagoe praised the winners of Incredible Edibles Family Challenge for their efforts and thanked families nationwide for taking part.
“I’d like to say well done to the winners who put a huge effort in to Incredible Edibles Family Challenge and also to highlight the tremendous effort and dedication of the almost 4,000 children and over 1,500 families who took part in the five-week programme,” said Mr Jagoe.
“It was great to see the positive impact the challenge has had on families during this challenging period of social distancing, as a result of Covid-19. Now more than ever it is important that families and children have a greater understanding of food production and Incredible Edibles Family Challenge has greatly encouraged this.”
