Michael Blanch of The Committee for the Commemoration of Irish Famine Victims (CCIFV) has written to President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Political leaders andlocal T.D’s recently to highlight 2020 NFMD (National Famine Memorial Day) Commemoration.
Michael Blanch commented “The third Sunday in May is formally designated NFMD, this formal pledge was fulfilled in 2019 but was abandoned in 2020”.
“Minister Madigan pushed the date back to the fourth Sunday in May without reason or explanation. I have made a a request to the Minister to correct the Dail record for the Oireachtas members and the people.” said Michael Blanch.
In response to the above letter, CCIFV can confirm on the 17th of May 2020 there will a commemoration in Stephen’s Green which will not be open to the public.
Michael Blanch concluded “It has also been confirmed that with one years advance notice which hasn’t happened in 12 years of the National Famine Commemoration Day, the 2021 event will take place in Buncrana”.
