As the deadline for voter registration approaches, Fianna Fáil candidate for Citywest and Tallaght South Lynda Prendergast, is urging all eligible residents to ensure they are registered to vote for the upcoming local and European elections and highlighted instances where residents encountered difficulties with registering to vote or with updating their voter registration details.

“In a thriving democracy, every voice matters,” she said. “It’s vital that every eligible individual registers to vote and exercises their democratic right.

“I’m aware of instances where local residents trying to update their address on the voter database have faced unnecessary hurdles, simply because the website won’t load. Residents have also highlighted concerns around not receiving confirmation and are unclear as to whether or not they have successfully registered to vote.

“This is unacceptable. Every eligible voter should be able to easily update their information without encountering unnecessary barriers.”

In light of these challenges, Lynda Prendergast concluded by calling on the local authority to take immediate action to rectify these issues and ensure that the voter registration process is smooth, efficient, and accessible to all eligible residents.

“I have raised this issue with the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O’Brien and I am committed to ensuring swift action is taken to address these concerns.”

Applications to register or to change name or address details must be received by your local authority no later than 20 May 2024 and may be submitted online at www.voter.ie
