Bohernabreena Cemetery Clarification Welcomed

Bohernabreena Cemetery

Local Councillor, Charlie O’Connor, has welcomed clarification from South Dublin County Council in respect of representation he made on behalf of a number of people regarding traffic movements in Bohernabreena Cemetery.

The Council responded to his enquiries with the following reply:-

“A system of removable bollards is in place in Bohernabreena graveyard which is intended to control access around the graveyard. In general visitors to the graveyard should park their cars in one or other of the available car parks and then make their way on foot to their family graves. The bollards in question were installed at the request of the elected members most recently following a motion of the Tallaght Area Committee in January 2016. The bollards were installed in an effort to combat anti-social and criminal activity in the Graveyard including illegal dumping, damage to graves by vehicles and in the interest of pedestrian safety. The bollards remain locked in place at all times and are removed only by Council staff when access is required for a funeral procession, grave digger, monumental sculptor, or maintenance work. The Council regrets having to take the decision to implement the installation of bollards; however these measures have proven to be successful. Having recently reviewed the situation, the Council is not in a position to remove the bollards on a permanent basis. However, the Council may be in a position to facilitate access to the restricted part of the Cemetery in exceptional circumstance and by prior arrangement with the Burial Grounds Section by phoning 01 414 9234”

According to Charlie O’Connor there will be people who regularly visit the Cemetery dissatisfied with the Council’s response and he has undertaken to continue to monitor the situation on their behalf.
