75% of rental properties in South Dublin didn’t meet minimum legal standards

People Before Profit Councillor Darragh Adelaide has expressed deep concern over shocking new figures from South Dublin County Council revealing that 75% of rented properties in South Dublin failed to meet minimum legal standards upon inspection in 2024.

Commenting on the findings, Councillor Darragh Adelaide said, “These figures highlight a shocking disregard for tenants’ rights and safety. Landlords are neglecting even the most basic legal standards, leaving renters to suffer the consequences.”

Despite rising non-compliance, only 8 improvement notices have been issued to landlords in South Dublin this year. By contrast, Dublin City Council issued 946 improvement notices in 2023.

Councillor Adelaide said “The real issue here is, however, the government’s housing policy. For years, successive governments have prioritised landlords’ profits over tenants’ rights. Rents are soaring while the number of homes constructed fell by nearly 7pc in 2024. Relying on the private market to deliver housing has failed, and is leaving thousands in either substandard accommodation or homelessness.

People Before Profit is calling for urgent action to introduce strict penalties for landlords who refuse to meet legal standards, along with social and affordable housing built publicly on public land”.
