Barry Andrews, Fianna Fáil MEP for Dublin, has warmly welcomed Michael McGrath’s positive evaluation from the European Parliament recently stating: “I have no doubt that Michael McGrath will be an excellent Commissioner for Justice and will work for all of Europe. After over a decade of distinguished service as a TD and Minister, Michael McGrath is now taking the step to represent Ireland at the European level.”
After a gruelling three hour hearing in the European Parliament recently, during which time he received two spontaneous rounds of applause for his answers on the rule of law and rejecting divisive language on migration, the three Chairs of the Committee on Civil Rights, the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Affairs and the Committee on Legal Affairs have given Michael McGrath a positive evaluation this afternoon, effectively confirming his nomination to the Commissioner for Justice.
“Michael McGrath has a proven track record in Irish and European governance. His depth of experience in public administration and his dedication to promoting good governance make him exceptionally well-suited to take on the role of Commissioner for Justice at a crucial time for the EU. In his opening speech and answers throughout the hearing, McGrath stated that his priorities were protecting minors online, fighting corruption, protecting European democracy and upholding consumer rights. I look forward to working with him over the next five years to ensure that the European Union makes progress in all those important areas.
“Additionally, Commissioner McGrath will be responsible for a number of issues that I have worked on as MEP for Dublin over the last five years. I will be raising the issues of spyware such as Predator and Pegasus and the presence of their parent companies in Ireland, as well as ensuring corporate sustainability and an end to fast fashion” concluded Andrews.
