New Chapter for Citywest with €7.95m Library Granted Planning Permission

Taoiseach Simon Harris, Mayor Baby Pereppadan and Minister Emer Higgins

Plans for the construction of a new €7.95m library in Citywest Shopping Centre have been granted planning permission by South Dublin County Council. This significant development will transform a portion of the existing shopping centre into a state-of-the-art public library, spanning three floors and offering a wide range of community services.

Local TD and Minister for Business, Employment and Retail Emer Higgins expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The approval of the Citywest Library is a fantastic step forward for our community. Libraries are vital spaces that foster education, creativity, and social connection, and I am thrilled that Citywest will soon have a facility that reflects the needs and aspirations of our growing population.”

Higgins added, “This new library will serve as a cornerstone for the community, providing resources and opportunities for people of all ages. I look forward to seeing it become a vibrant hub for learning and engagement in the heart of Citywest.”

The project includes the conversion of a former children’s play facility and the addition of a new second-floor extension with a sedum roof. The library will feature extensive public spaces, staff and welfare facilities, as well as external enhancements, including bicycle parking and PV panels. The development is expected to be completed by mid-2026.

South Dublin County Council Mayor Baby Pereppadan also welcomed the announcement, saying, “The Citywest Library project is a great development that will enhance the services available to the people of Citywest and surrounding areas. I am proud to see this project move forward and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our local area.”
