The transformation of Saggart’s old St. Mary’s National School building into a modern community centre is a testament to the power of community activism and collaboration. This success story, initiated by the Saggart Village Residents Association (SVRA) and now managed by the Saggart Schoolhouse Board, reflects the resilience and vision of the entire community.
“In Saggart, we’ve witnessed the remarkable impact of community-driven initiatives,” notes Lynn Tierney, chairperson of SVRA. “Saggart’s population has tripled since 2006 and is Ireland’s youngest place by average age according to the 2022 census. It’s important to create spaces that cater to our growing community’s diverse needs.”
In 2016, when the old school building was for sale, SVRA, a group of dedicated residents, successfully campaigned for South Dublin County Council (SDCC) to buy the building and invest in its transformation into a community centre. Lynn Tierney, who is a candidate in the upcoming local elections for the Social Democrats, credits the community centre campaign as where her passion for community representation developed. “I joined SVRA in 2016 and, the following week, the committee made the decision to push South Dublin County Council to invest in Saggart. I’m incredibly proud of what the community has achieved,” Ms Tierney reflects.
The Saggart Schoolhouse Board, formed in 2019, has overseen the building works completed by SDCC and secured significant funding for the project through the Leader Programme for Rural Development.
“The Saggart Community Centre represents a significant milestone and much-needed community facility. With various rooms for activities, a café, and hot desk spaces, it promises to be a dynamic hub for all.” A former chairperson of the Schoolhouse Board, Ms Tierney concludes, “I congratulate the Board of Management and SDCC and wish them the best of luck over the coming weeks as they make their final preparations to open the doors.”
