Community and school run campaigns to combat litter, graffiti and dog fouling are to be supported under a €36,000 fund being made available to
South Dublin County Council, according to Minister Katherine Zappone.
The Minister is encouraging the Council to use the funding as soon as possible to increase public awareness. Under the scheme the local authority can partner with community based initiatives to clean up graffiti, produce information leaflets or hold competitions.
Welcoming the initiative Minister Zappone added: “Education and awareness is key to protect our many green and public areas from littering, dumping and graffiti. This money will be used to encourage communities to take action – including information campaigns, projects which promote litter education as well as highlighting the negative impact of graffiti.
In particular I welcome the inclusion of local schools. Our young people have already shown that they can be leaders in the community when it comes to the environment. The success of the Green Flag awards is proof of that. Parents, teachers and schools should encourage children and teenagers to avail of this opportunity. By encouraging students to use their creativity and imagination we can come up with campaigns which capture the public imagination and have an impact beyond the classroom and school playground.
The Council will be able to use the fund to provide up to 70% of funding for each individual project. I would also encourage local businesses to continue their support for anti-litter campaigns by working with schools and communities.”
