TD for Dublin Mid-West Mark Ward TD has called for full investigation after information he received from the HSE, disclosed that 4 health care centres in CHO 7 were closed following increased levels of legionella bacteria. Infection with legionella can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia.
Teachta Ward said “The Rowlagh Health Centre is literally beside my constituency office, and I became aware that there might be a problem when a member of the public informed me of a number of closures this year. “I contacted the HSE, and they confirmed that 4 health care centres in CHO 7, including Rowlagh, were closed following increased levels of legionella bacteria. “Infection with legionella can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia.
“This infection can be very serious and can be fatal. “The HSE informed me that these closures were based on risk assessment for each service, as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of service users and staff. “I had asked the HSE several questions which they failed to answer including if the public notified? “Did groups who share space with health centres close? Such as creches”.
“And are other CHO areas experienced the same or have they been tested? “I have written to the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly two weeks ago and informed him of this issue. To date I have not received a response. “The Minister and the HSE must have a full investigation into this matter including to see if the buildings are fit for purpose. Rowlagh Health Centre is 40 years old and is outdated. The people of North Clondalkin still do not have a modern primary health care centre despite Government promises”.
