Now in its sixth year, Cruinniú na nÓg South Dublin encourages young people to join in the fun of this year’s event and participate in creative activities. South Dublin has over 20 events taking place in various areas including Adamstown, Perrystown, Clondalkin, Lucan, Tallaght, Ballyroan, MacUíllíám Estate, Greenhills, Castletymon and Knockmitten.
Young people and their families can enjoy free workshops, exhibitions and performances, and special events to encourage young people to try something new. Cruinniú na nÓg is an opportunity for children and young people to fulfil a secret creative ambition and realise their own artistic expression!
HIGHLIGHT EVENTS INCLUDE:
Doulab Circus Create with Circus! Perrystown Community Centre: workshops 10am-3.30pm. A day of contemporary circus, movement, and music workshops for the young residents of Perrystown. They will also have an opportunity to make new connections with the young residents of Clondalkin Towers Direct Provision Centre, who will be invited to partake in the day of workshops, which include creative juggling and manipulation, contemporary group acrobatic disciplines, stilt walking, music and much more!
Ruaille Buaille, Lucan Children’s Music Festival, from 11am, Griffeen Park, Lucan. SongTales, produced by Ceol Connected and presented in partnership with Ruaille Buaille, is a highly-participatory music and storytelling performance for children that features a respected musician-line-up including Áine McGeeney (fiddle/vocals), Colm Phelan (percussion), Seán O’Meara (guitar/vocals) and Stephen Markham (keys). It’s directed by Ceol Connected’s Dr. Thomas Johnston.
Campántas Drámaíochta – Drama performance, 11am at Áras Chrónáin. An Irish Language drama co-created with young people who have worked with Killian Ó Ciardubháin, Drama Dept UCD and Brian Ó Gáibhín, Director of Áras Chrónáin. Over 5 weeks, the group came together to explore movement, improvisation, Voice and sound projections and dialogue, character, text, and stories, culminating in a performance on Cruinniú na nÓg.
CNAG – Percussion Ensemble Creative Workshop, Noon at Áras Chrónáin. This performance is a culmination of a 6-week workshop, where young people from Clondalkin were introduced to the various aspects of percussion ensembles culminating in this creative production and public performance of a percussion ensemble piece created and led by the participants on Saturday 10 June 2023.
The Ceardlann workshops Percussion Project was open to teenagers between the age of 14-18 years of age, from various backgrounds in the Clondalkin community. This project and workshops are partnership driven between the experience Áras Chrónáin Creative Team and Percussionist Dave Hingerty.
DJing and Dance workshops at MacUíllíám Estate with Tallaght Community Arts
DJ Workshops: 11am – 12 noon; 12.30 – 1.30 pm; 2 – 3pm;
Dance Workshop 4 – 5pm
NOISE music facilitators will run 3 Dj’ing workshops for children and young people. Dance Facilitator Tatiana Santos will run an outdoor dance workshop at the Basketball Court/Astro, all at MacUíllíám Estate, culminating with a Dance-Off where our young DJ’s will have an opportunity to test their new skills. The event will be supported by Creative Places MacUíllíám Youth Arts Action Group.
North Clondalkin Library Family Street Festival, 12 – 4pm
North Clondalkin Library will be hosting a Spectacular Street Festival on Saturday 10 June. This event will be a feast for the eyes and ears of young people in North Clondalkin. Street performers will include puppeteers, jugglers, stilt walkers, circus acts, musicians, street art and more with lots of interactive fun guaranteed.
NOISE Music & go Dance for Change at Adamstown Castle Educate Together National School.
Live music and dance performance: 2.30 – 3.30pm
Join a group of choreographers & dancers from the multicultural dance platform, Go Dance for Change in collaboration with a group of young musicians and dancers from Adamstown as they perform for the local community as part of Cruinniú na nÓg festival at Adamstown Castle Educate Together National School. This performance is a culmination of an 8-week music and dance workshop programme that a group of young people aged 13- 18 have taken part in.
Cruinniú na nÓg is part of the South Dublin Creative Ireland programme, a flagship initiative of the Creative Ireland Programme’s Creative Youth Plan to enable the creative potential of every child and young person. It aims to celebrate and encourage children and young people’s participation in culture and creativity in activities such as art, music, coding and theatre workshops, performances, exhibitions, readings, film screenings and much more.
Announcing Cruinniú na nÓg 2023, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin said: “Every year Cruinniú na nÓg becomes more firmly embedded into the lives of young people all over Ireland. There’s a huge programme of free creative activities for 10th June that will really stretch the imaginative muscles of all young people. Cruinniú na nÓg 2023 is a wonderful opportunity for the young people of Ireland to show off a little, try a new creative activity, make new friends, and connect with their communities. Every event is free.”
The Creative Ireland Programme and its strategic partners have developed a number of creative projects, all planned to go live on Saturday 10 June 2023.
