118 new cost rental homes at Kilcarbery and Parklands are now being allocated to families as they prepare to move into their new long-term, secure rental homes, Dublin Mid WestTD has said.
Speaking ahead of the official launch of the new cost rental homes in Kilcarbery and Parklands, Deputy Higgins welcomed this progress being made in improving rental supply in the area.“For young people and families looking for a place to rent, finding somewhere that is both affordable and has security of tenure has been a massive challenge for the last number of years and unfortunately so many people feel they are caught up in a rent trap,” said Deputy Higgins
“As part of my work on the Oireachtas Housing Committee I have advocated for cost rental properties and worked with the Department of Housing to ensure we see delivery of rental properties that provide people with the security of a long-term lease and below market rent rates right here in our local community. “So I am thrilled to see 118 new cost rental homes in Kilcarbery and Parklands now being allocated to people and families in the community,” added Deputy Higgins.
“Cost rental is a new kind of housing delivery where rents are set at a minimum level of 25% below the market rents in the area and rent is based on the cost of building, managing and maintaining the homes so it makes it a much more affordable rental option. “Cost rental also offers people long-term security, because as long as there are no issues with breach of contracts or rent arrears the tenancy is of unlimited duration,” added Deputy Higgins.
“Many renters I speak to in the area say that the uncertainty of their tenure means that they simply can’t plan for the future but with cost rental, tenants have the peace of mind of knowing that this is their long-term home. “Allocation is based on a lottery system which takes into account your net household income (must be below €53,000 per annum), your household size, your ability to pay the rent cost and other such factors.“As we see more cost rental properties being developed they will be advertised online so I would encourage anyone in the community who is interested to keep an eye on the South Dublin County Council website as well as the websites of Approved Housing Bodies to know when applications for new developments open,” concluded Deputy Higgins.
