Sunday the 15th May the 3rd Sunday in May is firmly set in the National calendar as the National Famine Commemoration Day. Tallaght based group, CCIFV held their 20th An Gorta Mor Commemoration in Dublin as part of a National and Global Day of Remembrance, Wherever the Green is Worn. The Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Alison Gilliland Officiated at the Dublin Ceremony while the Taoiseach Officiated at the Ceremony in Strokestown, Co Roscommon. There were events taking place all over Ireland and overseas in America, Canada and Australia.
Sporting bodies also took part in the commemoration, Glasgow Celtic FC annually wear a special Jersey going back to 2009, the jersey features the National Famine Memorial Day crest. They wore the special jersey as they were presented with the SPL cup after winning the league.
The GAA held a minute silence between Dublin and Meath match for all those victims who died during the year’s of An Gorta Mor and the exiles forced to leave home and homeland. Leinster rugby club also held a minute silence before the commencement of their match. CCIFV Tallaght community group have come a long way since the first annual An Gorta Mor Commemoration took place in Dublin in 2003 a Nation is awakening from it’s slumber and silence.
