TD for Dublin Mid-West Eoin Ó Broin has said the government’s affordable housing targets for South Dublin are far below where they need to be for any real progress to be made in providing genuinely affordable homes for people to buy. According to figures Deputy Ó Broin received in response to a parliamentary question, on average just 227 affordable homes will be built in South Dublin every year up to 2026.
Commenting on the figures Teachta Ó Broin said: “Less than 230 affordable homes will be delivered in South Dublin every year according to new figures provided to me by the Minister for Housing. In the period 2022-2026, just 1,133 affordable homes are targeted for delivery according to the government’s housing targets. “The miserable targets show that Minister O’Brien and the wider government are not in serious about fixing our housing crisis. With these kind of projections, house prices will continue to soar, while families continue to be locked out of the market.
“We need at least 4,000 affordable purchase homes a year and local authorities and approved housing bodies must be the ones to deliver these homes. “People in Clondalkin, Lucan, Palmerstown and the Four Districts need a government that will take this housing crisis seriously. “Instead, the government will give huge handouts to big developers to deliver over-priced homes and reject any sensible alternatives proposed by the opposition to deliver real change for people.”
