The South Dublin County Council Housing Adaption Grant can be used to create a sensory room for those with a disability, Dublin Mid-West’s TD has confirmed. Deputy Emer Higgins has confirmed that the Housing Adaption Grant for older people and people with a disability can also be used to convert or install a sensory room in a qualifying person’s home.
Deputy Higgins said: “This grant is available from South Dublin County Council to support the elderly or those with a physical, sensory or intellectual disability or mental health difficulty, to make the necessary adaptions to their home to make it more suitable for their needs. “The grant has been extended to include sensory rooms. Sensory rooms can be hugely beneficial and have a really positive impact on both adults and children with a disability. These rooms are specifically designed to create a relaxing environment by stimulating all five of the senses but also act as a space for combatting over-stimulation which I know can be particularly beneficial to children and adults who have Autism,” explained Emer Higgins T.D.
“Many people who have a disability will be used to accessing sensory rooms in school, hospitals or day-centres and I am very pleased that the Housing adaption grant will support families to create the same environment at home,” continued Deputy Higgins “The grant is means tested and the maximum grant available is €30,000 with an Occupational Therapist’s report required to outline the need for the proposed works. “The application and any further information are available on the South Dublin County Council website www.sdcc.ie/en/services/housing/housing-grants,” concluded Deputy Higgins.
