Labour’s Chris O’Dwyer is calling for an immediate intervention at an illegal halting site located in Saggart Village. The Local Area Representative is calling on both South Dublin County Council and the Department of Housing to come up with a meaningful solution.
O’Dwyer, who recently visited the site said: “There is a worrying lack of facilities for families who are making use of the site and this should be cause for alarm for both South Dublin County Council and the Department of Housing. The site is not fit for use, it doesn’t have the necessary infrastructure or amenities. “I am calling on South Dublin County Council and the Department of Housing to put their heads together engage with the members of the Travelling Community and local residents to come up with a solution. During the recent episode of RTE’s Reeling in the Years we were reminded of the Carrickmines Tragedy, if we do not learn from such horrible events we will continue to fail at risk communities.
“Residents of the area have reported an increase of illegal dumping due to the lack of waste management and an increase of human waste being found by local clean up groups due to the lack of toilet facilities. The site is not appropriate for use and the its environmental impact is not fair on local clean up groups. “There needs to be meaningful investment and action on housing for the Travelling Community which has not been delivered or discussed.
